PSG's Ligue 1 Game Postponed for Champions League Edge
26 Mar
Summary
- LFP postponed PSG's match against Lens to aid Champions League campaign.
- Lens expressed anger, citing a concerning disregard for domestic competition.
- The decision aims to boost France's UEFA co-efficient ranking.

The French football league (LFP) granted Paris Saint-Germain's request to postpone their top-of-the-table Ligue 1 match against Lens. This fixture, originally set for Saturday, April 11, was moved to Wednesday, May 13. The postponement facilitates PSG's Champions League quarter-final ties against Liverpool, scheduled between April 8 and April 14. This decision follows a precedent, as PSG also had a league match moved for their tie against Chelsea.
Lens has voiced strong opposition, criticizing the move as a sign that the French championship is becoming secondary to European ambitions. They argue this precedent devalues domestic competition, especially after the league's reduction in teams and the discontinuation of the Coupe de la Ligue. PSG's sporting director countered that the rescheduling was necessary due to Liverpool's inability to play on a specific tragic anniversary.
The LFP explained their decision supports maintaining France's fifth position in the UEFA co-efficient rankings, which secures four Champions League spots. They also proposed adjustments for Lens' other fixtures. In a related move, Strasbourg's league game was also moved due to their Conference League commitments.
