VAR Errors Reshape Premier League Table
24 Oct
Summary
- VAR decisions can alter Premier League standings significantly.
- Brighton is the unluckiest team, Sunderland the luckiest.
- 89% of on-field decisions were correct, 98% post-VAR.

An analysis using the Key Match Incidents (KMI) Panel findings has created a hypothetical 'VAR table' for the Premier League, showing how incorrect decisions could alter the actual standings. Manchester City, currently leading, would drop to second place with 19 points if a disallowed Erling Haaland goal was overturned. Arsenal would consequently move to first.
Brentford would climb to fifth, and Liverpool would ascend to fourth, by benefitting from overturned penalty decisions awarded against them. Brighton is identified as the 'unluckiest' team, having faced three more incorrect decisions than favorable ones. Conversely, Sunderland is the 'luckiest,' with four more favorable incorrect calls.
The KMI Panel, formed in 2022, comprises former players, coaches, and representatives from refereeing and league bodies. Their rulings are made public weekly. Despite the potential impact of errors shown in the 'VAR table,' the Premier League stated that 89% of on-field decisions were correct and 98% post-VAR intervention, as of Gameweek 6.
