- Designed specifically for the needs of female athletes

A new $150 million, 100,000-square-foot training facility, the Kaiser Permanente Performance Center, has officially opened for the Portland Thorns and the expansion WNBA team, the Portland Fire. This first-of-its-kind dual-sport ground is meticulously designed to support professional female athletes.
Shared amenities include a large treatment area, a weight room, and a cafeteria, intended to promote interaction and peer support between the soccer and basketball players. Individual team lounges, locker rooms, and meeting rooms provide dedicated spaces for each team.
Designed by the firm Populous, the facility incorporates athlete feedback, such as the inclusion of handheld showerheads. The interior features a contrast between a strong exterior and a softer, neutral-toned interior, reflecting a vision to feel both strong and nurturing for its athletes.
The center already surpasses WNBA facility standards mandated for 2028 and serves as a significant recruiting tool. It represents a substantial investment in women's sports, with owners aiming to create a blueprint for future performance facilities.
Physician Dr. Jacqueline Brady highlighted the importance of fostering athlete autonomy, with the facility's collaborative environment supporting this goal. Features like a retractable wall in the training room and advanced equipment like the Alter G treadmill are designed for flexibility and accelerated recovery.
