Port Vale Bans Ash Scattering on New Pitch
6 May
Summary
- Families can no longer scatter or bury ashes at Port Vale's pitch.
- A new hybrid turf is being installed ahead of the 2026/27 season.
- Club seeks alternative space for memorials within Vale Park.

Port Vale FC has announced that families will no longer be permitted to scatter or bury ashes at its pitch. This decision follows the club's plan to install a new hybrid turf, a mix of natural and artificial grass, at Vale Park for the 2026/27 season.
The club stated that the new surface is intended to improve durability and performance, meeting the demands of modern football. However, due to the materials used, ashes would not decompose and could make the pitch discolored or "lumpy." Burying ashes would also damage the turf and drainage systems, incurring significant repair costs.
The club is actively seeking an alternative and suitable location within the Vale Park footprint to accommodate memorials. Further updates on this will be provided to supporters soon. This pitch upgrade is part of broader infrastructure investments, including the £2.3m Vale Park Community Campus and the approved Bradeley Football Development Centre.
