Alexei Popyrin achieved a significant milestone at the Italian Open on Thursday, securing his first Masters 1000 victory of 2026. He defeated Matteo Berrettini with a score of 6-2, 6-3 on Campo Centrale, Berrettini's home turf.
Popyrin expressed that this performance was crucial after a difficult stretch, which included a first-round loss in Madrid and three consecutive defeats. He had taken a two-week break to address calf and glute issues, mental burnout, and a career-low ranking.
Despite facing pressure, including saving three match points on his serve, Popyrin maintained control. He acknowledged the added challenge of playing against an Italian crowd but was pleased with his ability to close out the match in straight sets, marking a triumphant return to the Masters 1000 circuit.
