The Pittsburgh Pirates made substantial additions during the recent MLB Rule 5 Draft held on December 10, bringing five new players into their system. The team executed a trade involving one of their selections, acquiring right-handed pitcher Jaiker Garcia and cash considerations from the Texas Rangers in exchange for right-handed pitcher Colin Baumler, who was initially selected from the Baltimore Orioles.
Further strengthening their pitching staff, the Pirates also selected right-handed pitchers Junior Flores, Kyle Larsen, and Brian Mena. Flores pitched in Single-A with a 3.38 ERA last season. Larsen, formerly with the Texas Rangers, posted a 4.09 ERA in High-A. Mena, originally signed by the Colorado Rockies, had a 5.62 ERA and 1.69 WHIP in Single-A.
In addition to these acquisitions, the Pirates added lefty Brandon Neek, who finished last season in Double-A with a 5.40 ERA. However, the team also lost pitcher Jack Carey, a right-hander who had been part of the Pirates' system since being drafted in 2021 and played for High-A last year.
