Summary
- Pirates designate left-handed pitcher Génesis Cabrera for assignment
- Make room for right-handed pitcher Johan Oviedo on 26-man roster
- Cabrera pitched in 9 games for Pirates, with 4.91 ERA

In a roster move, the Pittsburgh Pirates have designated left-handed relief pitcher Génesis Cabrera for assignment and added right-handed pitcher Johan Oviedo to their 26-man roster. Cabrera, who signed a one-year major league contract with the Pirates on June 26, made 9 appearances for the team, allowing 6 runs over 11 innings for a 4.91 ERA.
Prior to joining the Pirates, Cabrera had brief stints with the New York Mets and Chicago Cubs earlier this season. He spent his first four MLB seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals before being traded to the Toronto Blue Jays in 2023, where he played through the 2024 season.
With Cabrera's departure, the Pirates' bullpen now has just one left-handed pitcher, Ryan Borucki, who returned from the Injured List on August 2. The team also recently traded left-hander Caleb Ferguson to the Seattle Mariners.
Pirates manager Don Kelly praised Cabrera's work ethic and teamwork during his time with the club, saying he "threw the ball well" and collaborated closely with pitching coach Oscar Marín. However, the move was necessary to clear a roster spot for the addition of Oviedo.
