Phillies Seek Relief & Bats Before Trade Deadline

As the Aug. 3 Trade Deadline approaches, the Phillies are prioritizing the acquisition of late-inning relievers and right-handed bats. This need is underscored by a season-ending UCL tear for Brad Keller, further straining the bullpen. Recent postseason history shows a troubling trend, with the bullpen posting a 5.58 ERA from Game 3 of the 2023 NLCS through Game 4 of the 2025 NLDS, going 0-for-7 in save opportunities during that span.

The Phillies' offense also faltered during this critical period, hitting just .199 with a .626 OPS and averaging only 3.2 runs per game. They recorded 10 or more strikeouts in nine of those 13 games. While President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski may explore trade options, the team's interim manager, Don Mattingly, believes the solution lies within the current roster.

Mattingly expressed confidence in his players, stating, "This is our team." He acknowledged that players like Trea Turner have shown recent offensive improvement, batting .311 with five home runs and 14 RBIs in his last 25 games. However, others like Brandon Marsh and Alec Bohm are experiencing slumps. Mattingly emphasized that consistent team offense, regardless of individual player fluctuations, will be key to remembering this season positively.
