Phillies Rack Up Third Catcher's Interference Call in a Month
20 Aug
Summary
- Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto awarded first base after interference
- MLB set record of 100 catcher's interference calls in 2024
- Realmuto's swing interfered by Mariners catcher Mitch Garver

On August 20th, 2025, the Philadelphia Phillies faced off against the Seattle Mariners, and for the third time in less than a month, the Phillies were on the positive end of a catcher's interference call.
In the first inning, Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto was initially called out on strikes, but he argued that his swing was interfered with by Mariners catcher Mitch Garver. The Phillies challenged the call, and after a video review, it was determined that Garver's glove did, in fact, interfere with Realmuto's bat, and Realmuto was awarded first base.
This comes as a continuation of a trend that has been building in Major League Baseball. In 2024, the league set a new record for catcher's interference calls, with 100 infractions, surpassing the previous high of 96 set the season before.
The Phillies have been at the center of this issue, with two previous incidents last month when the Boston Red Sox were in Philadelphia. In those cases, the catcher's interference calls allowed runs to score, including one that ended a game in extra innings.
