Summary
- Carlos Mendoza named third base and infield coach for Phillies.
- Mendoza previously managed the Mets for three seasons.
- The Phillies aim for a more data-driven defensive approach.
The Philadelphia Phillies announced Thursday the hiring of Carlos Mendoza as their new third base and infield coach. Mendoza joins the coaching staff led by recently appointed manager Don Mattingly.
Mendoza's previous managerial stint with the New York Mets spanned three seasons, where he led them to the NL Championship Series in 2024. He was dismissed in 2026 after 81 games. Prior to managing, Mendoza held coaching roles within the New York Yankees organization.
The Phillies' decision to bring in Mendoza follows recent staff changes and a stated intention to adopt a more data-driven defensive approach. The team's defense ranked seventh-worst in baseball in 2026, indicating a need for improvement in that area.
