PGA Tour Cancels Sentry Tournament of Champions for 2026 Season
22 Oct
Summary
- Sentry Tournament of Champions canceled for 2026 due to drought
- Efforts made to relocate event, but ultimately deemed impossible
- 2026 PGA Tour season to begin with Sony Open in Hawaii

In a significant development for the 2026 PGA Tour season, the Sentry Tournament of Champions has been canceled. The tour made the announcement on Wednesday, October 23, 2025, citing ongoing drought conditions on the island of Maui, where the event has been held at the Plantation Course since 1999.
The tour collaborated closely with Hawaii Governor Josh Green and Sentry Insurance, the tournament's sponsor, to explore options for relocating the event. However, it was ultimately deemed impossible to find a suitable replacement venue that met the necessary requirements for a PGA Tour event, including weather, playability, and infrastructure. Any potential new host site would also have had to be willing to accommodate the tournament during a peak tourism period.
As a result, the 2026 PGA Tour season will now begin on January 15 with the Sony Open in Hawaii at Waialae Country Club, rather than the traditional season-opening Sentry Tournament of Champions. This marks a significant change to the tour's schedule, as the Sentry event has long been a fan favorite, showcasing a tropical locale and airing in primetime on the East Coast.
The cancellation of the Sentry Tournament of Champions leaves the 2026 PGA Tour schedule with eight signature events instead of the usual nine. The tour has announced that players who won tournaments in 2025 but did not finish the season in the FedEx Cup top 50 will be eligible for the RBC Heritage in April, as an adjustment for the tournament's removal.
