Summary
- Carroll blamed himself and coaching for Smith's Raiders struggles.
- Smith had a strong start with Raiders but struggled with interceptions.
- Carroll believes Smith will rebound and surprise many with the Jets.

Pete Carroll, formerly the head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders, expressed amusement upon learning of his ex-quarterback Geno Smith's trade to the New York Jets. Carroll spoke glowingly of Smith, taking accountability for the quarterback's difficulties in Las Vegas.
Carroll stated, "We should've coached him better," emphasizing that the Raiders' offensive line struggled significantly. He believes Smith, who led the league in interceptions and sacks with the Raiders in 2025, will rebound in his return to the Jets.
Smith, who played for the Jets from 2013-2014, was acquired by the team via a late-round pick swap on Tuesday. Carroll recalled Smith's impressive offseason and preseason with the Raiders, but acknowledged the team faltered early in the 2025 season.
Carroll, who coached Smith with the Seattle Seahawks from 2019 to 2023, expressed confidence that Smith will succeed, attributing past struggles to coaching and poor pass protection. He stated, "I love the guy and want the very best for him."
