Penix Jr. Nears Return: Knee Health Dictates Falcons Comeback

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. expressed optimism about his recovery from his third ACL surgery, indicating he is close to returning to game action. However, he remains non-committal to a specific return date, emphasizing that his comeback will be dictated by reaching personal physical goals for his knee. Penix stated that his desire to play is strong, but his physical readiness is the ultimate deciding factor.

Penix drew a distinction between his situation and that of Patrick Mahomes, explaining that his knee injury and subsequent surgery were more complex. Having used both patellar tendon grafts previously, Penix required a quad graft for his latest procedure and also underwent surgery on the lateral side of his knee. He noted that his recovery from his first ACL surgery in 2018, after which he returned in six months, is not comparable to his current situation due to the cumulative procedures.

While Penix feels good and is progressing daily, he is focused on hitting specific physical benchmarks before deeming himself ready. He confirmed that if his knee feels 100% physically, he will be ready to play, regardless of the timing. The Falcons have not yet announced their starting quarterback for their upcoming game against the Carolina Panthers.
