Patriots Preseason Standouts and Struggles Revealed

With the 2025 NFL regular season just around the corner, the New England Patriots are putting the finishing touches on their preseason preparations. The team's final exhibition game is scheduled for Thursday night against the New York Giants, and the coaching staff has been closely evaluating the performance of players throughout training camp.

One player who has caught the eye is rookie running back Jaxon Henderson. The former Ohio State standout and second-round draft pick has made an electric start to his professional career, taking his first touch 100 yards for a touchdown in the Patriots' first preseason game. Henderson has averaged an impressive 7.6 yards per carry in the preseason and is projected to be a major contributor to the Patriots' running game, alongside Rhamondre Stevenson and Antonio Gibson.

Another player who has turned heads is undrafted free agent wide receiver Efton Chism. While he has primarily faced backup defenders, Chism has put up impressive numbers, catching 12 passes for 121 yards and two touchdowns in just two preseason games. With the Patriots' receiving corps lacking consistent production since Tom Brady's departure, Chism has a chance to earn a spot on the 53-man roster and make an impact this season.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Patriots have found a steadying presence in linebacker Robert Spillane. The 29-year-old, who was signed from the Raiders in the offseason, has been praised for his football IQ and ability to get the defense aligned properly. Defensive coordinator Terrell Williams has described Spillane as "like having another coach on the field," and the veteran linebacker has already made his presence felt, intercepting rookie quarterback Drake Maye twice in practice.
