Panthers Shake Up Roster: Veteran Linebacker Released, New Cornerback Signed
23 Jul
Summary
- Panthers release veteran LB Josey Jewell due to concussion symptoms
- GM Dan Morgan signs former Seahawks TE Tyler Mabry to fill roster spot
- Panthers sign CB Tre Swilling, who played for 49ers and Jets in 2023-24

In the lead-up to the 2025 NFL season, the Carolina Panthers have been active in shaping their roster. During their ongoing training camp, the team made a surprising move by releasing veteran inside linebacker Josey Jewell. The decision was made due to the fact that Jewell was still experiencing symptoms from a concussion he suffered last December.
To fill the vacant roster spot, the Panthers' general manager Dan Morgan signed former Seattle Seahawks tight end Tyler Mabry. This addition comes as the team continues to evaluate its defensive unit, which has undergone several changes in recent months.
Alongside the Jewell release and Mabry signing, the Panthers also bolstered their secondary by signing cornerback Tre Swilling. Swilling, who previously appeared in games for the San Francisco 49ers in 2023 and the New York Jets last season, will now join the Panthers' defensive backfield.
The team's offseason roster moves suggest a focus on strengthening their defensive unit, particularly in the secondary. While the Panthers did not land veteran safety Julian Blackmon, who recently signed with the New Orleans Saints, they remain confident in their new-look safety room, which includes former Raider Tre'von Moehrig and Ohio State's Lathan Ransom, a fourth-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
