Panthers Free Up Nearly $10M Cap Space

The Carolina Panthers have successfully generated additional salary cap space just before the start of the regular season. This was achieved by restructuring the contract of defensive lineman Tershawn Wharton.
Through this restructuring, $12.2 million of Wharton's base salary was converted into a signing bonus. This strategic move has resulted in the Panthers gaining approximately $9.7 million in available cap room for the current season.
Wharton is currently in the second year of a three-year contract. The team also introduced three void years to the deal, which will help in distributing the remaining cap hit over future seasons. However, Wharton will not be participating in the upcoming game against the Bears. He underwent neck surgery during the offseason and has been placed on the physically unable to perform list to begin the regular season.
