Summary
- Shadab Khan's bowling form questioned after two wicketless ODIs.
- Coach Hesson transitions Shadab's role to that of a batting all-rounder.
- Pakistan aims to test new players ahead of the next World Cup.

Pakistan's head coach, Mike Hesson, has publicly defended the team management's strategy of continuing to use Shadab Khan primarily as a batting all-rounder. This decision comes amidst growing scrutiny over Khan's bowling effectiveness, particularly following Pakistan's recent 41-run defeat to Australia in the second ODI on June 4, 2026. Khan's return to ODI cricket had already been a topic of debate, especially with other specialist spinners in the squad.
Hesson explained that Shadab Khan's role has evolved over his career, shifting from a primary bowler who bats to a dedicated batting all-rounder. Consequently, he now bats in the lower middle order, typically at number six or seven. This batting capability was evident in the second ODI, where Khan scored a fighting 71 off 104 balls. Hesson emphasized that Khan is now viewed as the team's fifth bowler, with the team management also focused on integrating and evaluating new players in preparation for the next World Cup, which is approximately 16 months away.
