Padres' Financial Play: Darvish Moves to Restricted List
26 Mar
Summary
- Yu Darvish voluntarily moved to the restricted list Wednesday.
- This move saves the Padres significant money for potential Giolito signing.
- Darvish is owed $15 million in 2026 and $14 million in subsequent years.

Yu Darvish has voluntarily been placed on the restricted list by the San Diego Padres. This decision, made as part of an agreement with the team, is anticipated to yield significant financial savings for the Padres. The move is strategically timed to potentially create the necessary flexibility to sign top remaining free agent pitcher Lucas Giolito.
Darvish, a decorated Japanese pitcher, is slated to earn $15 million in 2026 and $14 million in each of the following two seasons. Players on the restricted list are not paid by their teams. Darvish previously utilized this status in 2024 while addressing a private family matter, demonstrating a willingness to benefit the team financially.
The Padres are reportedly interested in Giolito, who himself is coming back from a UCL repair in early 2024. Despite a successful return last year with a 3.41 ERA, Giolito's free agency has extended into the current season. The Padres' current projected payroll is $219 million, with an estimated luxury tax figure of $270 million, exceeding the second tax threshold.
This financial maneuver involving Darvish could unlock further funds for the team. Additionally, the Padres are hopeful that a potential franchise sale to one of four multibillionaire bidders may also lead to increased spending flexibility during the season, aiding their efforts to strengthen the team's roster.
