Padres Eyeing Cardinals' Lefty Reliever Romero to Bolster Bullpen
30 Jul
Summary
- Cardinals fielding calls from 10 teams about All-Star closer Helsley
- Padres not viewed as a fit for Helsley, but interested in lefty reliever Romero
- Romero has had success against both righties and lefties this season

According to recent reports, the St. Louis Cardinals' front office has been busy fielding calls from rival executives about a number of their players, with their two-time All-Star closer Ryan Helsley being the most sought-after. As many as 10 teams have reportedly reached out to the Cardinals about Helsley, who has been a dominant force in the team's bullpen.
However, the San Diego Padres are not among the teams interested in acquiring Helsley. While the Padres are in the market for a reliever, they are not viewed as a fit for the Cardinals' closer at this time. Instead, the Padres have expressed interest in left-handed reliever JoJo Romero, who has been impressive for the Cardinals this season.
Romero, who was traded to St. Louis from the Philadelphia Phillies in July 2022, has posted a 2.12 ERA in 2023 and will not be a free agent until 2027. The Padres, who do not have a wealth of prospect capital to trade from, see Romero as a sensible addition to their bullpen, especially with the possibility that their current closer, Robert Suarez, could leave as a free agent after the season.
