Merrill's blast was his ninth since the All-Star break, leading the majors and extending his home run streak to three games. This victory extends the Padres' recent success, marking their third straight win and 13th in their last 17 contests, as they vie for a National League Wild Card spot.

The win also backed pitcher Casey Mize in his home debut. Acquired from Detroit at the Trade Deadline, Mize pitched six innings, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out six. His performance followed a difficult debut start in Arizona.
