Padres' All-Star Reliever Out for Opener
24 Mar
Summary
- Jason Adam will start the 2026 season on the injured list.
- He is recovering from surgery after rupturing his left quadriceps tendon.
- Adam is expected to return sometime in April 2026.

San Diego Padres' All-Star relief pitcher Jason Adam is set to begin the 2026 season on the injured list. Manager Craig Stammen announced that Adam, who underwent surgery for a ruptured left quadriceps tendon last September, will miss Opening Day.
While Adam expressed readiness, the team is adopting a cautious approach following his major surgery. He is expected to make his return sometime in April, provided his recovery progresses as planned. Adam made a couple of appearances this spring, pitching two perfect innings.
In 2025, Adam achieved a career-best season, posting a 1.93 ERA across 65 appearances and earning an All-Star selection. The Padres acquired him in 2024 from the Tampa Bay Rays. His absence means a roster spot is likely guaranteed for pitcher Bradgley Rodriguez, and allows Ron Marinaccio to join the big league club.
Adam's injured list stint can be backdated to March 22, making April 6 the earliest possible return date. However, Stammen's remarks suggest a mid-April return is more probable, barring any setbacks. Adam trusts the team's judgment regarding his return.
