Ottavino Blasts Mets' 'Embarrassing' Pitcher Usage Under Mendoza

Adam Ottavino, a former pitcher for the New York Mets, has strongly condemned manager Carlos Mendoza's stewardship of the team's bullpen during the 2025 season. Ottavino characterized the team's pitching strategy as "embarrassing" and "pathetic," particularly highlighting the MLB-record 46 pitchers utilized. He believes this approach directly led to a significant number of injuries within the bullpen, impacting the team's performance and playoff aspirations.

During a recent podcast, Ottavino detailed his concerns, suggesting that at least half of the pitchers who suffered injuries could have been protected with better oversight. He asserted that the Mets' bullpen, despite an initially strong start, struggled throughout the season due to this mismanagement. The sheer volume of innings pitched by relievers, ranking third in MLB, underscores the immense strain placed on the pitching staff.

Ottavino further accused the Mets' injury staff of lacking player education and implied that management pressured players to perform even when not fully healthy. He expressed a belief that Mendoza demonstrates a lack of understanding regarding bullpen dynamics and player well-being, noting a severe deficit in communication and care. The failure of starters like Sean Manaea and Kodai Senga also contributed to the bullpen's heavy workload.
