Summary
- Osaka defeats Sevastova 6-1, 6-0 in just 49 minutes
- Osaka's fastest career win came in 2016 in Brazil
- Tauson upsets 2nd-seeded Swiatek in straight sets

On August 4th, 2025, former world No. 1 Naomi Osaka made a triumphant return to the quarterfinals of a major tournament, cruising past Latvia's Anastasija Sevastova in just 49 minutes at the National Bank Open in Montreal.
The unseeded Osaka, who had not reached a quarterfinal in 19 months, dominated Sevastova 6-1, 6-0 in a lopsided affair. Osaka's fastest career victory came in 2016 in Brazil, where she dispatched Ana Sofia Sanchez 6-1, 6-1.
"I had a solid plan coming in here, and it happened to work out very well," Osaka said after the match.
Osaka's impressive run to the quarterfinals included wins over 14th-seeded Liudmila Samsonova and No. 22 Jelena Ostapenko. She will now face the winner of Sunday night's match between No. 5 Amanda Amisinova and No. 10 Elinia Svitolina.
In another notable result, Denmark's Clara Tauson, the 16th seed, knocked out second-seeded Iga Swiatek of Poland 7-6(1), 6-3 to reverse their previous meeting at Wimbledon last month. Tauson saved seven of nine break points and converted three of her five chances to secure the upset.
