Jose Ortiz secured his inaugural Kentucky Derby win aboard Golden Tempo, a victory he dedicated to his late grandfather. His older brother, Irad Ortiz Jr., achieved a personal best with a second-place finish on Renegade, marking a significant accomplishment in his career. Governor González-Colón lauded the brothers for their discipline and for elevating Puerto Rico's name globally.
Both accomplished jockeys honed their skills at the Escuela Vocacional Hipica in Puerto Rico before embarking on their professional careers in the United States. Irad began riding stateside in 2011, followed by Jose in 2012. The Ortiz brothers are slated to compete in the upcoming Preakness Stakes, each riding different horses. Jose will be on Chip Honcho, trained by Steve Asmussen, while Irad will ride Talkin, trained by Danny Gargan.
