22 Apr
Summary
- An Olympic water polo coach was found deceased in a hotel.
- The coroner ruled the death was due to suffocation/asphyxiation.
- The death was officially indicated as a deliberate self-inflicted ending.

Andrew McGinty, a respected coach for England and Great Britain water polo squads, was found dead in a Manchester hotel room on December 18. Hotel staff discovered his body after gaining entry to the room, which was locked from the inside, when he failed to check out.
At Rochdale Coroner's Court on April 20, Senior Coroner Joanne Kearsley announced that McGinty died of suffocation/asphyxiation. The circumstances surrounding his death led the coroner to conclude that he had deliberately ended his own life.
McGinty, 34, had been an integral part of the water polo community for over a decade. Organizations like the English School Swimming Association paid tribute to his dedication to developing school water polo and supporting representative teams. His contributions to water polo development and collaboration with national bodies were widely acknowledged.
