Bearman Cautions F1 Hype: Fast Starts Aren't Everything
8 Mar
Summary
- Bearman urges caution about Haas's fast preseason starts.
- He debuted for Ferrari in 2024, scoring points in his first two races.
- Haas team principal praises Bearman's talent and potential.

Haas driver Oliver Bearman is advising caution regarding his team's rapid starts observed during preseason testing. He noted that the initial quickness, potentially aided by a smaller turbocharger on their Ferrari power unit, might be an outlier as the season progresses and competitors adapt to the starting procedures. Bearman, who is scheduled to start Sunday's Australian Grand Prix from 12th, has already demonstrated significant potential since his Formula 1 debut in 2024. Filling in for Carlos Sainz, he qualified 11th and finished seventh for Ferrari in Saudi Arabia. He then scored points in his first two races for Haas in Azerbaijan and São Paulo, becoming the first driver to achieve this for two different teams. Last year, Bearman outperformed veteran teammate Esteban Ocon in qualifying and points, with a notable fourth-place finish in Mexico. His race engineer, Ronan O'Hare, acknowledged Bearman's maturity but pointed out that Melbourne would only mark his 28th F1 start, emphasizing the need for continued consistency. The target for the current season is to consistently score points. Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu expressed his admiration for Bearman, calling him a "joy to work with" and praising his speed and potential. Komatsu also addressed speculation about a potential sale of the team, stating clearly that Haas is not for sale and has not engaged in takeover talks, emphasizing the team's singular focus on racing.
