Ole Miss Camp: Kinsler Shines, Curne Tumbles

The Ole Miss Rebels have concluded their initial week of preseason camp, with the 2026 season opener against Louisville on September 6th approaching. Early reports from the Manning Center highlight significant developments among players.

Offensive tackle Tommy Kinsler IV, a senior transfer from Miami, is currently positioned as the Week 1 starting right tackle. Kinsler brings valuable experience, having played in 19 games over three seasons with Miami, including significant snaps in their run to the National Championship Game last season. He has begun to distinguish himself from other contenders for the position.

Wide receiver Johntay Cook II has also been a consistent performer during the offseason. He is expected to become the primary slot receiver, fulfilling his potential as a highly-rated recruit. Last season at Syracuse, Cook led the team in receiving yards and receptions.

Conversely, offensive tackle Carius Curne, a highly anticipated transfer from LSU, has seen his stock decline. Sources described his performance in spring practices as 'underwhelming,' and he also faced legal issues in Arkansas. While Curne possesses athletic talent and potential, his early collegiate career has not met initial high expectations.

Another player showing promise is sophomore offensive tackle Connor Howes. Despite being a long shot to start at right tackle in Week 1, Howes has demonstrated steady development and earned praise from offensive coordinator John David Baker. He appeared in all 15 games as a freshman and is seen as a future cornerstone for the offensive line.

Wide receiver Darrell Gill Jr., another transfer from Syracuse, has also not generated significant buzz during the offseason. Despite a strong collegiate track record, his role in Ole Miss' deep receiving unit remains uncertain as he builds chemistry with the team.
