Okoye's Fashion Week Fling Fuels Super Eagles Camp Controversy

Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye reported to the team's camp in Uyo as the final player, ahead of Nigeria's 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. The camp opened on Sunday, with most players arriving on Monday for the first training session. Okoye, however, was absent until Wednesday morning.

Footage emerged of the 27-year-old Udinese goalkeeper with American rapper Cardi B at Milan Fashion Week, where he was also seen modeling his club's third kit. This appearance, which occurred prior to the team's Friday match against Madagascar, ignited criticism from Nigerian fans and journalists on social media. Critics pointed to a perceived communication gap from the Super Eagles' management regarding Okoye's expected arrival.

This incident is not the first time Okoye has faced scrutiny for late arrivals to the Super Eagles camp. He was also the last player to arrive for the ill-fated 2026 World Cup qualifiers against South Africa in June 2024, and faced similar criticism during preparations for the 2025 AFCON qualifiers in November 2025. Despite these recurring issues, Okoye had recently been reclaiming his position as first choice during Stanley Nwabali's absence in March and June, delivering impressive displays.

With Nwabali now back in the squad and Arthur Okonkwo also present, the starting goalkeeper position for the upcoming matches remains uncertain. Okoye's recent form for Udinese has seen him concede 11 goals in five Serie A appearances without keeping a clean sheet. He has made 21 appearances for the Super Eagles since his debut in October 2019.
