Ohio State coach Ryan Day is adopting the VUCA framework—volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity—to guide the Buckeyes' pursuit of a national championship in the 2026 season. This strategic approach acknowledges the challenging schedule, which includes road games at Texas, Indiana, and Iowa. Day emphasizes making quick, decisive actions and continuous adaptation to navigate these pressures.

Last season, despite finishing undefeated in the regular season and ranking No. 1 for 12 weeks, Ohio State experienced significant late-season challenges. They struggled against ranked opponents, with rushing attacks limited and quarterback Julian Sayin facing increased sacks and interceptions in crucial games against Indiana and Miami. These issues highlight a need for improvement in offensive line play and the ground game.

Looking ahead to 2026, Day has identified the running back position as paramount, emphasizing the need for a high level of play from returnees Isaiah West and Bo Jackson, alongside newcomers Ja'Kobi Jackson, Legend Bey, and Turbo Rogers. He also stressed the importance of the offensive line's development, with players like Carson Hinzman, Josh Padilla, Austin Siereveld, Ian Moore, and Phillip Daniels expected to contribute to finding the best five starters. Improving the rushing attack and quarterback protection remain top priorities.
