Mayor Embraces Viral Knicks Chant

Mayor Zohran Mamdani recently shared his delight over a viral rhyme that captured the spirit of New York City and celebrated the Knicks' NBA championship win. The rhyme, originating from a fan, famously states, 'My mayor's still Muslim, my bagel's still Jewish, even the Pope's on our side, Knicks in five!' Mamdani, wearing a Knicks jersey, chuckled as he recalled how the chant has resonated with him and the city.

The fan chant, initially 'My mayor's Muslim, my bagel's Jewish, my Christian Dior, Knicks in four,' evolved into a unifying mantra for New Yorkers. Mamdani highlighted how the chant reflects the city's diverse makeup and the Knicks' team dynamic, emphasizing that every player contributed to the victory. He noted the electric energy in the city, amplified by the Knicks' historic NBA Finals run and the World Cup.

New Yorkers had eagerly awaited this championship for 53 years, enduring numerous disappointments. The mayor expressed that the current moment of collective joy and unity, rather than tragedy, is unprecedented. He described how the nation's largest city felt like the world's smallest town, with everyone united in hope for the Knicks. The viral chant has been celebrated as 'pure New York City poetry' and has appeared on merchandise.

The chant's creator, MD Ahnaf Hossain, explained his motivation was to unite a city with diverse religious and ethnic backgrounds, drawing from his own upbringing. Other fans and even the official New York Knicks account have riffed on the chant, showcasing its widespread impact and the deep sense of pride it has fostered.
