Nuggets Match Jones Offer, Boost Luxury Tax Bill
27 Jul
Summary
- Nuggets matched Spencer Jones' two-year, $12 million offer.
- Matching the offer significantly increases Nuggets' luxury tax.
- Nuggets also work to retain Peyton Watson amid other suitors.

The Denver Nuggets have successfully retained forward Spencer Jones by matching the Oklahoma City Thunder's fully guaranteed two-year, $12 million offer sheet. This decision came on Sunday night, sources indicated.
Despite facing considerable financial burdens, the Nuggets prioritized keeping Jones, a player they originally signed as an undrafted free agent in 2024. Matching the offer sheet will result in a $32 million increase in the Nuggets' luxury tax payments, escalating from $36 million to $68 million. This move also places them within the league's second apron.
The Nuggets are currently deep into their tax obligations but may explore trades during the season to alleviate some of these costs. Concurrently, the team is actively working to retain another restricted free agent, Peyton Watson. Watson has attracted interest from the Atlanta Hawks, Milwaukee Bucks, and LA Clippers, adding another layer of challenge to the Nuggets' offseason plans.
