Notre Dame's Veteran Defense Aims for National Title

Notre Dame's 2026 defense is built on extensive experience, returning 16,579 career snaps. This veteran core, including players with over 1,000 career snaps, mirrors the successful roster management seen in national championship teams like Ohio State and Michigan. Coach Marcus Freeman emphasizes player agency, a trait new transfers are quick to notice.

The defense's continuity is notable, with a snap count similar to their championship game appearance two seasons prior. This experience is crucial, especially in the secondary. In contrast, the offense returns significantly fewer career snaps, with a notable portion of experience coming from transfers in previous seasons.

While experience is a major asset, its limits are acknowledged, citing past seasons where veteran teams did not achieve top success. However, the current Irish roster's blend of talent and experience positions them as strong contenders for the upcoming season.
