Northern Iowa's athletics community is grieving the sudden death of freshman tight end Parker Sutherland, who passed away on Saturday at the age of 18. The university announced his death without specifying a cause.
Cedar Falls Fire & Rescue had responded to a call at the university's athletic facilities earlier in the week. Reports indicate Sutherland collapsed during a workout on Thursday.
Athletic Director Megan Franklin and Head Coach Todd Stepsis shared their devastation. They remembered Sutherland as a talented player with exceptional character, who embodied the spirit of a Panther.
Sutherland played in four games for the Panthers this season. Prior to his time at Northern Iowa, he was a standout athlete at Iowa City High School.
