Young Captains Lead NHL Charge

The Chicago Blackhawks and San Jose Sharks have appointed young captains, challenging the notion that a player might be too young to lead. Macklin Celebrini, at 20 years old, was named the youngest captain in Sharks franchise history on September 25, 2026. Just ten days prior, the Blackhawks announced Connor Bedard, 21, as their new captain.

This trend aligns with NHL history, where young leaders have thrived. Connor McDavid, at 19 years and 266 days, remains the youngest captain in NHL history, a record previously held by Gabriel Landeskog. These players, including Celebrini and Bedard, are noted for their blend of talent, character, and leadership.

Historically, players like Steve Yzerman, who was 21 when named captain of the Detroit Red Wings, also demonstrated that age is not a barrier to effective leadership. Yzerman later led the team to three Stanley Cup championships. Similarly, Wayne Gretzky was 22 when he captained the Edmonton Oilers to their first Stanley Cup in the 1983-84 season.

Jonathan Toews also became captain of the Blackhawks at 20 years old in 2008. Current Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson believes Bedard is the ideal leader for the team's next generation. Tracey Myers, an NHL.com Blackhawks reporter, emphasizes Bedard's status as the team's best player and face, drawing parallels to Toews' impact.

Patrick Kane, who played with Toews for years, noted that Bedard, like Toews, attracts teammates and fans. Kane sees similar leadership qualities in Bedard, reinforcing the decision to name him captain. Despite a recent shoulder surgery, Bedard led the Blackhawks with 75 points in the previous season. His dedication to winning and coach Jeff Blashill's high expectations suggest Bedard will continue to push boundaries upon his return. Both Celebrini and Bedard are considered potential Hart Trophy contenders in the upcoming season.
