6 Aug
Summary
- NFL preseason games start this week with 48 games
- New rules for 2025 season include tweaked kickoff, Hawk-Eye virtual measurements
- Top rookies set to make their NFL debuts in preseason

The long-awaited NFL preseason is finally here, as teams take the field for the first week of exhibition games. As of July 31st, the preseason technically began with the Hall of Fame Game, where the Los Angeles Chargers defeated the Detroit Lions. However, the main preseason schedule is set to begin in earnest on Thursday, August 7th.
Over the next three weeks, there will be a total of 48 preseason games, with at least one game airing nationally on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of this first week. Fans can expect to see some new rules in action, including a tweaked kickoff and the implementation of Hawk-Eye virtual measurements. Additionally, many of the league's top rookie players will be making their NFL debuts during these preseason contests as teams evaluate their rosters.
While not all star players will see significant playing time in the preseason, the games will provide the first glimpse of what's to come in the 2025 NFL season. After the three-week preseason, there will be a week off before the regular season kicks off on September 4th.
