NFL's Billion-Dollar Deal: Players Demand Fair Pay
13 Mar
Summary
- NFL seeks a lucrative new media rights deal by September 2026.
- Former player Shawne Merriman advocates for player compensation increases.
- An 18-game season would require a new collective bargaining agreement.

The National Football League is reportedly aiming to finalize a new, more profitable media rights agreement before the start of the 2026 NFL season in September. This move comes as the league looks to significantly increase its current annual earnings, which already exceed $10 billion.
Former NFL player Shawne Merriman stated that players should receive increased compensation from these new deals. This is particularly true if the league successfully implements an 18-game regular season schedule, which would require an amended or new collective bargaining agreement.
The current collective bargaining agreement is set to expire in March 2031. However, discussions about early negotiations may emerge following recent leadership changes within the NFL Players' Association.
Merriman emphasized that fans will continue to pay for the entertainment they enjoy, even as costs for accessing games through various streaming platforms and subscriptions increase. For the 2025 season, fans could have paid upwards of $575 to over $779 to watch all games.
