16 Sep
Summary
- Players prefer grass for better grip and fewer injuries.
- 16 NFL teams play on artificial turf in 14 stadiums.
- MetLife Stadium's turf linked to numerous player injuries.

Players across the NFL are voicing a strong preference for natural grass playing surfaces over artificial turf, driven by concerns over injury prevention. The NFL Players Association actively campaigns for grass, using the slogan '#WorthTheCost.'
Proponents of grass argue it offers superior footing and flexibility, potentially reducing the risk of injuries. As of 2026, half the league's teams, totaling 16, play on artificial turf in 14 stadiums. Eight of these stadiums are enclosed in some manner.
The controversial playing surface at MetLife Stadium has been linked to a significant number of soft-tissue injuries sustained by players from both the Giants and Jets, as well as visiting athletes. This issue gained further attention in 2023 following Aaron Rodgers' Achilles tear at the venue, prompting the NFLPA to intensify its advocacy for grass.
Conversely, 16 stadiums utilize real grass playing surfaces. While Allegiant Stadium is fully enclosed, State Farm Stadium features a retractable roof and a retractable field, allowing for outdoor play.
