The National Football League is set to introduce a comprehensive quality control accreditation system for playing surfaces, with a library of approved materials becoming available to teams by 2026. Manufacturers will present synthetic turf plots for evaluation against strict league standards at an upcoming testing event.
Beginning in 2026, NFL teams will be able to select from this accredited library when replacing existing surfaces, with a target completion date by the end of the 2027 season. The league plans to roll out a field-recommendation system by the 2028 season, mirroring safety-rated helmet lists, to guide clubs in choosing optimal playing conditions.
This move is designed to phase out less ideal fields and establish uniform quality standards. While the NFL doesn't mandate natural or synthetic grass, continuous testing using devices like the BEAST and STRIKE Impact Tester will inform recommendations, ensuring evolving requirements are met to support both clubs and athletes.
