NFL Bans Ammonia Inhalers Amid Safety Concerns
5 Aug
Summary
- NFL prohibits teams from providing ammonia inhalers
- Cites FDA warning on lack of safety and efficacy
- Potential to mask concussion symptoms a concern

In a move aimed at player safety, the NFL announced in August 2025 that it has banned the use of ammonia inhalers, capsules, and "smelling salts" throughout all league games. The prohibition applies to all team personnel, including coaches, trainers, and medical staff.
The league's decision was prompted by a 2024 warning issued by the FDA regarding the lack of evidence supporting the safety and efficacy of ammonia inhalers marketed for boosting mental alertness or energy. The NFL also noted that these products had the potential to mask certain neurological signs and symptoms, including potential signs of concussion.
As a result, the league's Head, Neck, and Spine Committee recommended a complete ban on the use of ammonia inhalers and related products during NFL competition. The news of the ban was first reported by San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle, who had been a regular user of such stimulants.

"I've been distraught all day," Kittle joked, acknowledging the risks associated with ammonia inhalants. The league's move to prohibit these products is part of its ongoing efforts to prioritize player safety and address the potential long-term effects of head injuries in the sport.
