- Justin Engel's promising career is sidelined by injury.
The next generation of tennis champions is emerging as the sport sees a notable absence of teenagers in the ATP top 20. This marks a significant shift, highlighting the ascent of established stars. On the WTA side, however, 19-year-old Mirra Andreeva and 18-year-old Iva Jovic are prominent young talents.
Andreeva has already achieved a WTA ranking of No. 5 and recently became a Grand Slam champion at the French Open in 2026, defeating Maja Chwaliński in straight sets. This victory was her fifth WTA title and made her the youngest French Open women's champion since 2020.
Iva Jovic has demonstrated consistent performance, reaching at least the fourth round of every Grand Slam this season, with her best result being the quarterfinals at the 2026 Australian Open. She has also secured two WTA 500 Guadalajara Open titles.
Among the rising male stars is 19-year-old Federico Cinà, an Italian player who won his first Challenger title this year at the Pune Challenger and made his Grand Slam debut at the French Open. He has also broken into the top 200 ATP rankings.
Kristina Liutova, a 16-year-old from Russia, is the youngest talent on the WTA Tour, already claiming her first title at the WTA 250 Memphis Classic. Her impressive performance saw her ranking soar from No. 229 to No. 126 within weeks.
However, 19-year-old Justin Engel, a German player who had a strong 2025 season, including a Challenger title win, has been sidelined by a chronic elbow injury since March 2026. Despite this setback, he remains a player to watch if he can recover.
