Newcastle Player Wrongly Red-Carded: KMI Panel Rules
17 Mar
Summary
- Jacob Ramsey's second yellow card was deemed incorrect by the KMI Panel.
- The panel found Ramsey's foot slipped, not an attempt to deceive.
- VAR will review second yellow cards starting next season.

The Premier League's Key Match Incidents (KMI) Panel has determined that Newcastle United's Jacob Ramsey was wrongly issued a second yellow card in their recent 2-1 victory over Manchester United. The incident occurred in first-half added time when Ramsey was cautioned for simulation after going down following an encounter with the goalkeeper.
The panel's review, decided by a 3:2 vote, found that Ramsey's left foot appeared to slip as he moved past the goalkeeper, suggesting it was not an intentional attempt to deceive the referee. This marks the first instance this season where the KMI Panel has concluded a player was incorrectly dismissed for a second caution.
While second yellow cards are not currently subject to VAR review, this will change from the upcoming season. However, VAR's ability to overturn such decisions will be limited to specific circumstances, such as when the initial foul itself is deemed incorrect, not merely the card issued.
This ruling follows a similar case last month where Wolves' Ladislav Krejci was also wrongly dismissed against Crystal Palace. In that instance, the KMI Panel identified the player's first booking as the error.
