Maharashtra is set to unveil a new cricket stadium with a staggering 1,00,000-capacity in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). This ambitious project, led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, is being developed in partnership with CIDCO and the Mumbai Cricket Association.
The new venue is poised to become one of the largest cricket stadiums globally, rivaling Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium. Discussions between the Mumbai Cricket Association and CIDCO have charted a course to significantly enhance the state's sports infrastructure.
This development is expected to shift focus from the current Wankhede Stadium, which has a capacity of over 33,000. The MMR already boasts DY Patil Stadium and the CCI-Brabourne Stadium, but the new stadium promises a vastly larger scale.
MCA President Ajinkya Naik stated that the stadium will elevate Mumbai cricket and place Maharashtra firmly on the global sporting map. It is envisioned as a hub for nurturing future talent, strengthening grassroots cricket, and hosting international and domestic tournaments.
The project aims to boost player development, provide exposure to emerging talent, and enhance the overall cricketing ecosystem. Furthermore, it is anticipated to stimulate sports tourism, create employment, and improve the region's global sporting profile while uplifting fan experience and supporting urban development.
