Nebraska QB Search Hits Snag as Minchey Flips to Kentucky
6 Jan
Summary
- Kenny Minchey, a Notre Dame transfer, flipped commitment to Kentucky.
- Nebraska now has only one scholarship quarterback for 2026.
- The Huskers lost starter Dylan Raiola to the transfer portal in December.

Nebraska's search for a starting quarterback has hit a significant roadblock with the unexpected decision of Kenny Minchey. The transfer quarterback from Notre Dame, who had committed to the Huskers on Sunday, flipped his commitment on Monday to join Kentucky. Minchey was considered Nebraska's top target to fill the crucial void left by starting quarterback Dylan Raiola's entry into the transfer portal on December 15, 2025.
The departure of Minchey leaves Nebraska with a precarious quarterback situation for the 2026 season, with only T.J. Lateef remaining on scholarship. Lateef, a true freshman, stepped in for the injured Raiola late in the 2025 season, starting the final four games after Raiola suffered a broken leg. The team subsequently lost its final three games, concluding with a 44-22 defeat in the Las Vegas Bowl on Wednesday.
This quarterback instability comes as coach Matt Rhule and the Nebraska staff aim to address other critical needs on the offensive and defensive lines, hoping to build a more competitive roster after consecutive 7-6 seasons. The Huskers are actively seeking multiple quarterbacks through the transfer portal this month to bolster their depth and future prospects.
