Summary
- NCAA fields expand to 76 teams in 2027.
- Expansion includes play-in games called 'opening round'.
- Big 12 and ACC led the charge for expansion.

The NCAA Tournament is preparing for a substantial expansion, increasing its field size from 68 to 76 teams for both men's and women's competitions, effective in 2027. This expansion is anticipated to be officially approved by NCAA committees as early as May. Reports indicate that 52 teams will secure a place in the primary bracket. The remaining 24 teams will participate in 12 new "opening round" games held the Tuesday and Wednesday following Selection Sunday, determining the final spots in the Round of 64.
The transition marks the first field enlargement since 2011, when the tournament grew to 68 teams with the introduction of the "First Four" play-in games. Prior to that, the field had remained at 64 or 65 teams since 1985. Key conferences, including the Big 12 and Atlantic Coast Conference, have been vocal proponents of this expansion. NCAA president Charlie Baker has publicly expressed his support, citing several "very good reasons" for the increase.
