NCAA Baseball Bracket Seeding Gets Major Overhaul
12 Feb
Summary
- NCAA tournament seeding now covers top 32 teams, not just 16.
- Bracket groupings will consider proximity and conference rivals.
- Seven conferences anticipate multiple bids for the tournament.
The NCAA baseball tournament is set to undergo a significant change in its selection process this year. Previously, only the top 16 teams were seeded, but the committee will now extend this to the top 32 teams. This adjustment is intended to create a more balanced bracket for the postseason.
Despite the expanded seeding, the familiar bracketing principles will remain in place. This means the committee will continue to prioritize geographic considerations and strive to separate teams from the same conference when organizing the bracket. Teams seeded 1-4, for example, will be grouped with teams seeded 29-32 and matched accordingly.
Several conferences are projected to have a strong showing in the tournament, with seven leagues expecting multiple bids. The SEC leads this group with an anticipated 14 bids, followed by the ACC with 10. The Big 12, Big Ten, Sun Belt, AAC, and Big West conferences are also expected to send multiple teams. Washington, UTSA, Nebraska, and Notre Dame are currently projected as the last four teams to make the cut, while Indiana, Kansas State, Western Kentucky, and Northeastern are among the first four out.
