The NBA has officially begun exploring expansion, with its Board of Governors approving a move to survey interested parties for new franchises in Las Vegas and Seattle. This decision signifies a major step towards potentially increasing the league to 32 teams.
Commissioner Adam Silver indicated that expansion would be prioritized after securing new media and collective bargaining agreements, both of which were finalized in 2023 and summer 2024, respectively. Reports suggest that expansion fees for each new franchise could range from $7 billion to $10 billion.
Seattle, which has been without an NBA team since the SuperSonics relocated in 2008, is eager to welcome a franchise back. The city has a history of strong fan support and has developed world-class facilities. Las Vegas is also a strong contender, with multiple interested ownership groups, including those involving prominent figures like Magic Johnson.
Both cities have demonstrated their readiness for professional basketball. Las Vegas currently hosts NBA Summer League and G League events, and Seattle boasts a modern arena. This potential expansion marks the NBA's first since the Charlotte Bobcats joined in 2004.
