NASCAR Warns Lapped Cars: Don't Ruin Races!
22 Apr
Summary
- NASCAR officials intervene when slower cars affect race outcomes.
- Blue flags and chat systems remind drivers to avoid impacting leaders.
- Teams may be called to the hauler for 'unintelligent' tactical decisions.

NASCAR officials are implementing stricter communication protocols to prevent slower cars from inadvertently affecting race outcomes. This was highlighted after a late caution at Kansas Speedway, which led to a controversial overtime restart where Denny Hamlin lost a near-certain victory. The incident involved Cody Ware, a car multiple laps down, whose spin prompted the caution.
NASCAR's vice president of race communications, Mike Forde, explained on the 'Hauler Talk' podcast that while no penalties are issued for unintentional interference, teams are reminded of their responsibility. "Don't be part of this outcome, be aware that there are leaders battling for the win here," Forde stated. Slower cars are typically alerted to approaching lead-lap cars via blue flags and a Microsoft Teams chat system.
However, NASCAR reserves the right to meet with teams whose strategies are deemed 'unintelligent' and negatively impact the race. Forde elaborated that such discussions aim to foster smarter decision-making within the garage, preventing scenarios that could alienate other competitors. This proactive approach ensures fairer competition and a more satisfying racing experience for all involved.
