NASCAR is set to host its Anduril 250 race on a 3.4-mile street circuit at Naval Base Coronado. This marks the first time NASCAR has staged an event at an active military installation. The unique track navigates past aircraft carriers, operational runways, and hangars, offering an unprecedented racing experience.
The creation of this track, named the Qualcomm Circuit, was a collaborative effort between NASCAR and the U.S. Navy's Amphibious Construction Battalion, known as Seabees. Over 17 days, these skilled military personnel worked alongside NASCAR to build the 3,200 concrete barrier sections and erect grandstands, completing the course ahead of schedule.
The genesis of this event traces back two years, exploring various Southern California locations for a permanent racing venue after the Clash at the Coliseum concluded. After considering sites like Del Mar Racetrack and Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Naval Air Station North Island emerged as the ideal, albeit inaccessible at first, location.
Navigating the project involved overcoming distinct operational "languages" between NASCAR and the military, with officials learning each other's terminology and protocols. This cross-cultural collaboration culminated in a fully realized street course, ready for the race, with even the planned flyover jets utilizing the base's facilities.
