Young sailors from Nagapattinam's fishing communities have triumphed at the FOTNA Sailing Cup 2026, securing the Optimist Green Fleet Trophy. This significant achievement followed just two months of dedicated training.
The two-day regatta, which took place on September 19 and 20, attracted approximately 80 sailors competing across six different boat classes. The Indian Navy and the Royal Madras Yacht Club (RMYC) organized the event.
The Nagapattinam Yacht Club, actively promoted and supported by RMYC, showcased exceptional performance. These young sailors demonstrated impressive skill and consistency to clinch the Optimist Green Fleet title.
Further success was seen in other categories. Sailors supported by Chennai Port and Cholamandalam Finance performed well in the Optimist Main Fleet. Krishna of RMYC, a seasoned international gold medallist, led his fleet.
In the J/80 class, the Indian Navy and RMYC concluded with tied scores, with RMYC securing first place based on tie-break rules. The Indian Navy also achieved first place in the Enterprise class and second in the Omega and ILCA 6 classes.
Capt Vivek Shanbhag noted RMYC's 18-month program for underprivileged youth, many of whom have achieved competitive success. The Nagapattinam victory is a key milestone in RMYC's mission to expand competitive sailing to Tamil Nadu's coastal areas.
Rear Admiral Upal Kundu presented awards, praising the successful and safe event. He also commended race officials for completing a record number of races in a short period.
