Espi's 90th-Minute Strike Secures Mourinho's Madrid Win

Jose Mourinho's second spell at Real Madrid commenced with a hard-fought 2-1 win against Espanyol on Saturday. Substitute Carlos Espi netted the decisive goal in the 90th minute, securing all three points for Los Blancos.

Jude Bellingham initiated the scoring for Real Madrid in their season opener. The new signing, Espi, ultimately sealed the victory after Alex Calatrava had found an equalizer for Espanyol. Mourinho, returning to Madrid 13 years later, faces the task of unifying the squad and challenging Barcelona's domestic supremacy.

Mourinho fielded a strong lineup including Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior, and Bellingham, alongside debutants Bernardo Silva, Denzel Dumfries, and Ibrahima Konate. Bellingham, finding his scoring touch, headed home an Arda Guler free-kick to give Madrid the lead.

Espanyol, however, fought back, with Alex Calatrava leveling the score in the 30th minute following a well-executed team move. Despite chances for Mbappe, the Parisian striker couldn't find the net. The introduction of record signing Yan Diomande and Marc Cucurella in the latter stages bolstered Madrid's attack.

Federico Valverde struck the post with a low effort, but it was Espi, the least heralded of Madrid's summer acquisitions, who capitalized on a loose ball in the box to score the crucial late goal, marking a triumphant return for Mourinho.
